I was leaving a shopping center near my house. (Actually, it was the same corner where I had the car accident I've written about several times. It's not my favorite place.) When the light turned green, I started my left turn when someone behind me started honking their horn repeatedly. When I had finished my turn the woman behind me flew around me and pulled up next to me with her
window down. I heard her
shrieking before I actually saw her face. Actually, I saw her hand before I saw her face since she was signalling to me that I was not her favorite person. In fact, she was screaming the same message her finger was sending, probably just for clarification. I looked away, figuring it wasn't always a good idea to make eye contact with irrational people. At this point she pulled up along side me again and repeated her greeting while explaining a little more about what was disturbing her. She screamed "Your bumper stickers! I'm Catholic. I'm democrat. F--- You! She repeated that last sentence several times. The only thing I could think is that this lady has a strange way of sharing her faith. I also thought back to the article I wrote recently about what a Catholic is NOT.
While I was analyzing her theology, she was flying up behind me as though she was going to
rear end me. I'm
anticipating another insurance claim. I'm also sending up a help call to my Spouse.
Her next
maneuver was to pull up in front of me and slow down. Thinking that she was hoping I'd
rear end her, I changed lanes and passed her. My turn was coming up, so I pulled into the left turn lane. I was surprised to see her whip in behind me. What are the odds that she would be going the same way I was? Or, is she just following me to make sure I had gotten that last sentence loud and clear?
I made my turn with my friend tailing close behind honking her horn and making a scene. The entrance into my apartment complex wasn't far away, so I was hoping she would pull around me, greet me in her usual congenial manner and be on her way. No such luck. I put my right signal on and, sure enough, she was right on my tail. I told the Lord, well, it looks like were' going to have company, Lord. I'm going to need You real bad!
As I turned into my complex, she jerked off the side of the road and sat at the entrance watching me and making note of where I was living. She sat there for a few seconds and then pulled away.
As I was walking into my apartment and watching for her, I was wondering if perhaps she was raging against the gnawing guilt of an abortion. Was she angry at
someone who had hurt her? What was she really angry about? But what bothered me most was how people drop that word "Catholic" like it was a political party you noted on your voter registration or a club you joined, or maybe the nationality you inherited from your Great Grandparents.
I know I sound like a broken record, but a Catholic is someone who believes what the Catholic Church teaches - all of it! In the culture and time of the New Testament, believing wasn't just knowing and agreeing with a fact. It meant dedicating one's life to the truth believed. So when we say that we believe what the Church teaches, it means that we make every decision in accord with what the Church teaches. We live every day in the light of what we know to be true. So as my tailgate clearly says, "You can't be both Catholic and Pro-Choice."
I feel sorry for this lady. She's obviously not at peace. But the bumper stickers are still on the truck. Help me pray for this lady.
