The Health Care Bill or the Death Management Bill?

I've believed for many years that this country would fall from within. I believed that we would slide down the slippery slope far enough that we would enthusiastically elect our own dictator and lose our freedom while smiling and thinking everything is peachy.

I was right! We elected him in the most enthusiastically attended election in memory with bumper stickers everywhere about hope and change. Change we did, comrades! We are no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave. We're the land of the government controlled and the home of the cowardly compliant.

Below are notes that a friend sent me on the new health care bill. You can use the link below to check them for yourself, or you can just read them and weep. If you are planning on getting older, this bill should scare the willies out of you. God forbid you ever get cancer because the government will decide how hard you get to fight the thing. It's really a disconcerting situation and I don't see anyone raising a ruckus about it. God help us.

What Stinging Comment?

To the guy who wrote and expressed his belief that his previous comment had "stung" me; I don't actually remember your first comment. I hope you're not too disappointed in that.

Nauseating

This is nauseating, insane and darkly humorous. This, this, ug, this person who was arrested for taking young girls over state lines to have sex with them, calls himself a "minister" and then as he is found guilty and drug off to jail, he proclaims himself a "prophet" who is suffering for the gospel. As if that isn't enough, he claims that his arrest and conviction is a Vatican conspiracy! OK, that's the funny part. I'll say this though, if the Vatican did something to get this guy off the street, out of the pulpit and into jail, I say we did the world a favor. Now there are numerous young ladies who find themselves confused, hurt and angry over what they have gone through. There is nothing more heinous than a spiritual leader sexually abusing a child. Yes, that goes for Priests as well, Actually, that goes doubly for Priests since they are, in fact, ordained to spread the gospel and administer the Sacraments rather than to prey on children. Guys like this duffus are imposters at best.

Lord have mercy on the little girls this man has hurt. Bring them out of the darkness he has plunged them into and into your healing light.

Eight Year Old Phoenix Girl Raped by 9-14 Year Old Boys

This story makes me sick! These children came from Liberia where rape is a method of warfare. The girl was removed from her home because of her own family's attitude toward her. How far we have come from the original plan of God for the dignity of both men and women. Please joining me in praying for this young girl. Pray that she finds healing in Christ and safety from any further assault. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

St James, Pray For My Brother

Several years back, not long after my conversion, I was talking with Kimberly Hahn on the phone about some less than congenial situation with my brother. I was taken aback by her response. She suggested that I pray for my brother and ask the intercession of St. James since my brother's name was James. At first, I didn't know what to make of that kind of approach. Was that just some kind of superstition or was there any real grounds for thinking that there was any significance in a name?

While pondering the idea after hanging up the phone, it struck me that I had taken the name "Patrick" for my Confirmation name for my Patron Saint, Saint Patrick of Ireland, who had played such a huge part in bringing me home to the Catholic Church. It struck me that not only had I chosen that name for St. Patrick's significance in my journey, but that forty four years earlier, my baptist parents had named me Patricia, the feminine form of Patrick!

So since that time I have had no problem asking the intercession of St. James for my dear brother. I've also had no problem asking St. Jude as well, for reasons that Catholics will understand. It has also been suggested to me many times that I add St. Paul to the team, which I have done. Also I have added St. Jerome, because of his expertise in biblical languages which I see not only as something my brother and St. Jerome share, but also as a significant stumbling block to my brother.

All this to say, that the Feast of St. James is coming up later this month, and I try to remember to ask others to join me in prayer for my brother at this time of year. Thank you for your faithfulness and for your fervent prayers on his behalf.

Hate Crime Committed Against the Catholic Church in Turlock, California

Hey folks, I am hoping that you will help me with a project that means a lot to me and really means a lot to all Catholics. If you have watched the video from the piece before this one, you are surely disgusted and offended by the behavior of these young men against the statue of the Virgin Mary. Their violence was not just against a piece of plaster. Their hatred was directed against the Catholic faith; an icon of which any statue of Mary is known to be. If this kind of violence had been directed toward a synagogue, temple or mosque, the press would be calling this a hate crime and the public would be outraged! Dear Sir,

I am a blogger who came across the story of the Statue of Mary that was attacked and stolen from St. Thomas Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic Church in your city. I am hoping that your City Attorney realizes this is not merely a vandalism case. This is a hate crime committed against an icon of the Catholic Church. This crime should be treated with the same vigilance that a defacing of a Synagogue, Temple or Mosque would be. I will be watching and commenting on how this case is handled. The millions of Catholics in this country, who find this act unspeakable, deserve all the justice that any other religion would receive.

The Darkness Fights Back

I've been blown away by the hate mail lately. Not that there has been so much, but that the content of the messages has been so revealing. A recent comment was from a person who is railing against religion in general. Even his Muslim girlfriend was the victim of his rage. He despised any religion that held its followers loyalty.

In each message I have discerned a true spiritual or emotional battle that causes me to want to pray for them. That would include the lady who chased me home the other day. What kind of internal struggle causes someone to seek out a blog that deals with faith in Christ and then lash out in rage?

So I'm establishing a margin piece where I not only commit myself to prayer for the writers of these disconcerting messages, but I'm going to ask my readers to pray for them as well. I won't be mentioning them by name; God knows them personally. But I will promise to pray for them. Will you join me? thanks.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The Rev. Tim Vakoc, a Minnesota priest who was gravely wounded by a roadside bomb in Iraq five years ago, has died, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis said Sunday. He was 49.

Vakoc, who was believed to be the first military chaplain wounded in Iraq, died at a nursing home in suburban New Hope on Saturday. The cause of death was not immediately released. Vakoc was an Army chaplain on May 29, 2004, when the blast cost him an eye and severely damaged his brain as he was returning from celebrating Mass with troops near Mosul. "A man of peace, he chose to endure the horror of war in order to bring the peace of Christ to America's fighting men and women," Archbishop John Nienstedt said in a statement. "He has been an inspiration to us all and we will miss him. We ask everyone to remember him in prayer."

The major was hospitalized for four months at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washingt on, and was transferred in a near coma to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis in October 2004. After many surgeries and infections, he slowly started to recognize friends and family, and began to communicate with squeezes of the hand or slight smiles. In the fall of 2006, he spoke for the first time in 2½ years. Vakoc, a Robbinsdale native, served as a parish priest before becoming an Army chaplain in 1996, and serving in Germany and Bosnia. He shipped out to Iraq shortly before his 44th birthday.
