I am so over Mike Clancy and the Arizona Republic

Mike Clancy's latest piece for the Arizona Republic is painful to read (as usual), partly because of its falsehoods and distortions about the Catholic Church and Bishop Thomas Olmsted, but also because it's embarrassing for Clancy. His facts are so consistently wrong and his bias so obvious that it actually makes me cringe.

Now, of course I don't expect our local paper to fawn over the bishop or whitewash the Church, but is fact-checking and fairness too much to ask?

You can read the entire article, here, if you have the time and the stomach for it.* But as I did last time, allow me to comment on a couple of glaring snippets. Clancy says of the Catholic Church:

The church has taught that birth control is 'intrinsically wrong' since 1968, around the time the pill came into widespread use.

The statement is shocking.

It is absolutely no secret and easily ascertained that the Church has taught the intrinsic evil of contraception not merely for the past four decades, no, but since the establishment of the Church approximately 2,000 years ago.

Not once (meaning "never") has the Church taught anything different.

Clancy is alluding to Pope Paul VI's 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, which simply reiterated, against the backdrop of the sexual revolution, the unbroken, unchanging teaching of the Church since her inception.

How can a veteran religion reporter exhibit such a weak grasp of basic Church doctrine, the Church he's been covering for years and years? It's also troubling that he doesn't seem to have adequate knowledge of modern cultural history, either. For not only has the Catholic Church always taught that contraception is "intrinsically wrong", but until the 1930s, every Protestant denomination taught the sinfulness of contraception as well. When a committee of Anglicans was the first to abandon Christian principles on this well-established point of the moral law, even the secular world was shocked, as an editorial in the Washington Post makes clear:

Carried to its logical conclusion, the [Anglican] committee's report, if carried into effect, would sound the death-knell of marriage as a holy institution by establishing degrading practices which would encourage indiscriminate immorality. The suggestion that the use of legalized contraceptives would be "careful and restrained" is preposterous. -- March 22, 1931 edition.

With Authority

When I first started learning about the Catholic faith, I ventured out onto some message boards and forums to ask some anonymous questions of Catholics. One thing that struck me immediately was how they spoke of the Catholic Church as though she had authority over all mankind. They were clear that if a person wanted to have a relationship with God, they needed to come through the Catholic Church and be in right relationship to the Catholic Church. Coming from a protestant background, that was a foreign concept. You followed this preacher or that preacher. You read so and so's books and agreed with them or you went to this guys seminars and you agreed with him. You picked your own camp and you could change camps any time you felt "lead" to do so. You were free to choose because there was no absolute authority.

It was a lot like the days of Christ when all of Israel followed this rabbi or that one. When a person talked about their beliefs they would quote this rabbi or that rabbi and would choose whose beliefs they cared to align their own to. There was room for debate. There was no authority.

So when Jesus came along, as we read this morning in Mark chapter one, and spoke about God with authority as though he knew what he was talking about first hand, they were startled. Who is this guy who speaks with authority as though we need to fall in line behind him in order to know God. Who does he think he is? He doesn't quote the rabbis, he wasn't formally educated by any rabbi. He just shows up to synagogue and reads the scriptures as though he wrote them himself!

They must have felt as uncomfortable about Jesus' voice of authority as I felt about the Catholic Church's voice of authority. Who do they think they are telling me that in order to know what God wants of my life I have to become a Catholic and follow the teachings of the Catholic Church?

Well, the Catholic Church looks and sounds like her founder. Jesus left her his authority just before his ascension. He handed Peter the keys and breathed on his first Bishops and gave them the authority to bind and loose and forgive sins. So when the Catholic Church speaks, we need to listen because she speaks with the authority of Christ. And if you want to know Jesus intimately, you must be Catholic and you must eat his flesh and drink his blood and follow the teachings he left for us in his Church.

Dealing with adult children is really challenging. It's a lot like teaching them to drive. They get behind the wheel of your most expensive possession and they go flying down the road with no experience and sometimes no idea how to keep that car between the lines. They don't recognize the signs and they aren't familiar with driving customs that keep experienced drivers within the law. When they realize that they are in control they often ignore the pleas of their white knuckled parents demanding that they leave more than a few inches between their car and the next. Basically they are like unguided missiles looking for somewhere to impact.

Young adults are often like that. Parents have spent eighteen years teaching their children about life and God and how to relate to both. Then when they feel the power of their own legal rights and especially their own living environment, they throw off all their parents' carefully presented wisdom and theology. They have to figure these things out for themselves.

In a real way, they are correct. God has no Grandchildren. We must all come to that crossroad where we decide for ourselves who is behind the wheel. Are they going to apply their parents teaching or are they going to venture out and find their own beliefs. It's their call now.

The last couple of years have been very difficult as a parent. I've watched my adult children make choices that have broken my heart and made me ask myself where I went wrong. I've spent untold hours before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, in tears pleading for God's mercy and grace to be poured out on them as they go careening down life's highway.

Problem is, I've always been a control freak. I've always wanted to supervise their every move. I home schooled them so that the world didn't have a chance to rob them of their God-consciousness. I made sure they knew their Bible verses. I made sure they were at Church on Sunday. When God called me to the Catholic Church, I was completely transparent with them about my journey (once I knew where that journey was headed). I made sure to allow them the freedom to make their own choice concerning coming into the Church because they had been raised as Protestants and I knew that conversion to the Church was a difficult and personal decision.

But I have discovered that some of them came into the Church because the family was coming into the Church. They were not so sure deep inside. So when adulthood came along, they chose to follow their own conscience. Unfortunately, that meant following their confusion right out of church of any kind. For several weeks after learning that one of my daughters was agnostic, I sobbed into my pillow and into my Rosary. How could this happen? Why did they seem to sincere and now so sincerely disinterested?

At the same time that I was mourning the defection of my daughters, I attempted to give good sound advice to a couple of friends in their struggle to follow God. That also turned into a disaster and I threw my hands up and asked God why every life I tried to touch and lead to Him was rejecting my good advice.

Eventually, when I stopped crying long enough to listen, these two words came through loud and clear. "Let go." It became painfully clear that God did not need my help and in fact found my help a hindrance at times. Not that giving good advice or evangelizing our children isn't the right thing to do, but that trying to control our children and others is the wrong thing to do. Having spoken the truth in love, my next assignment was to just "let go!"

After all, where was I when I was in my 20s? Was I growing in grace? Was I Catholic? Was I busy searching out truth for myself? Nope. I was busy serving my own interests and light years away from where I am today. So why do I expect my kids to be 55 year old when they are in their 20s? Because I want guarantees that they will be in heaven and that they will realize all the wonderful things I have come to see. All very good motives. Perfect motives. But I can't seem to stop trying to do God's work my way. Frankly, I make a really bad Holy Spirit. I just need to "let go."

Someone reminded me recently that as St. Ambrose advised St. Monica, I need to speak less to them about God, and more to God about them. And because Jesus can't resist confidence in His grace, I need to trust Him with their eternal souls. I need to trust His love for them to be as amazing as it has been for me. I need to trust that they have caught more than I have been taught and know that the source of all life and all peace is found in Christ and His Church.

And since prayer is far more powerful than any influence on earth, I will pray. I will offer every Mass I attend for my precious children and Grandchildren. I will accept the pain this life delivers and offer up every sacrifice that comes along for those precious souls. I will love and encourage and hug till my dying day and then I will pray like I cannot pray now till Christ returns in glory for the souls of my descendants. I will be confident in the grace of God and I will "let go."

Irena Sendler Died May 12, 2008 (aged 98) Warsaw, Poland

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an 'ulterior motive'. She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews (being German). Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids). She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected. Al Gore won --- for a slide show on Global Warming. Later another politician, Barack Hussein Obama, won for his work as a community organizer for ACORN.

I sometimes shy away from The Vortex and Michael Voris' criticism of the Bishops, but I absolutely agree with the fact that the reason fictional Catholics in government have been able to do so much damage is because their Bishops have not taken a strong stand against them and the scandal they inflict on the Catholic Church. This is according to traditionalist website Pontiflex.roma.it, which covers studies and research carried out in Scotland by the Society for Tradition, Family and Property, a body that was established to promote the thinking of the Catholic intellectual, Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira.

According to the Catholic website, Gibson’s film is important in that it taught the whole world the story of the Scottish leader who led his fellow nationals in the rebellion against English occupation. However, it missed out one fundamental fact about the figure of Braveheart: his Catholic faith.

I'm Flippin' Excited!

Over the last ten years I've piled on a lot of pounds. I've also experienced that "over the hill" thing where things that once worked, don't work so well any more. As I've also mentioned about here, I was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia and Dercum's Disease, either of which would sideline a person fairly easily. I have asthma and usually had to use my inhaler just to get from the car to the office. It had gotten to the point where I was no longer able to perform all the functions of my job. Some days I could not walk across the street because I would become so out of breath that I had to stop half way and rest (not in the middle of the street though ;). If you've ever read my blog, you know all that.

What you might not know is that in the early 90's I used to be a personal trainer. So being here is extra frustrating to me. I remember feeling like super woman.

So a friend of mine on Facebook was promoting this stuff called Oxygen4Energy. I remember thinking, that's what I need, a tank of oxygen on my back so I can get from point A to point B without panting like a St Bernard! Keep in mind, as my friend Beccy can tell you, I'm as skeptical as the day is long about these sales things. I've done Avon, Discovery Toys, Princess House Crystal, etc. I see one of these gigs coming and I run the other way.

One thing Kenny reminded me of was how athletes, after a long run or a big play, come out to the sidelines and take oxygen. It isn't because they are ill or unfit, it's because oxygen helps them recover quicker and gets them back in the game. It also vastly improves performance when they get there.

Kenny said that when he was in the air force, when they had a headache or were really tired they would sit in the cockpit and breathe some oxygen for a few minutes and they would feel much better. Then I remembered when I was a young'un and had pneumonia, they would give me breathing treatments with oxygen and they made me fell relaxed and awesome.

But I kept thinking, "oxygen, if only I had access to oxygen maybe I could get out and walk again!" My new rule is that I don't touch anything salesy (I made that word up) that has not blown my hair back on trial. So when Kenny told me there was a way to get two cans of this stuff for $20 and try it out, I figured that was a safe venture. So I went on his web site and ordered two cans.

Too bad you couldn't see my hair blowing back this morning as I walked farther than I've ever walked since living here at beautiful Biltmore Lake. I freaked out some geese and enjoyed the beautiful white ducks and climbed the bridge, twice, and walked to the road and back with my tiny little can of the only substance we human will die without in a matter of a few minutes.

I've only used one can in the last two weeks since they arrived and it has changed my life. I have had better clarity of thought at work, I've had better recall, I've been able to exercise, I've walked across the street to work with a smile on my face, even my posture has improved. I have hope that I can regain some measure of health and fitness and I'm just fllipping happy about it!

Have you heard that in Las Vegas they have Oxygen Bars? Yup, they do. They are a really hot item right now. Oxygen cures a hungover. It's true. Now don't get all freaked out, I'm not promoting drunkenness at all. I'm very straight laced about getting drunk. If I caught any friend of mine getting wasted I'd give them a piece of my mind. But the point is that that is how restorative and rejuvenating oxygen is. Folks who want to keep going at the tables after too many drinks can sit and suck down some oxygen for a few minutes and keep going the rest of the night before their bus leaves!

At least, the abortuary seems to blame them and the special prayers of the Church.

One of my first tweets on Twitter was "Newt Gingrich for President!" But I sensed that the nation didn't take Newt very seriously and I knew he had run a muck at some point and so I didn't think he had a chance of beating Obama, which is the most important objective of this next election.

Then along came Cain. I liked him. He was positive, practical and pro-life. He was all american. And he had the advantage of putting an end to the stupid rants of liberals who thing conservatives just want to defeat Obama because he's black. (Personally I thought Collin Powell should have made a run last time so I get real steamed when folks throw that accusation around.) Well, we all know how that went down. I was very disappointed that he had apparently not been as principled as he appeared.

OK, so I've stood back and watched as the polls have bounced and swayed this way and that for weeks now with one thought in mind. Who can beat Obama? I mean who, other than Romney, can beat Obama. I'm just not ready to have a Mormon President. I'll vote for him if its the only chance we have to get rid of Obama. But I just can enthusiastically wave a flag and holler Romney for President.

But because of the nasty comments of the token liberal at Fox, I got to know Rich Santorum better and I have to say I truly like this guy. I like how he lives his faith in the public square. I had almost given up on ever seeing a Catholic politician that wasn't utterly embarrassing and scandalizing. This guy has everything I would want in a President. He's been rock steady, which we can't exactly say of Gingrich. He's experienced which we could not say of Cain. The only question is whether he's so morally good that the non-religious and the anti-Catholic conservatives will support him. I'm thinking he's cream of the crop, I'm just waiting to see what happens as we get closer to the convention.

I haven't really thought much about Ron Paul since he said that the Bush administration was happy about 9-11 because they could use it as an excuse to invade Iraq. I think Bush 2.0 no doubt took some pleasure in finishing what Bush 1.0 started, but I did not read delight in his face that day in the elementary school reading class when he got word. I saw terror and Texas Cowboy pissedoffness. I think if we had given him a free hand and if we knew how to fight a way anymore, we would be done with the scourge of radical Islam already. But we are too sissyfied for that now days.

So there you have my political commentary for this week. I've thrown out my Cain bumper sticker with sadness, but as my friend Kenny reminded me today, we need to start participating in this campaign with our Rosaries! We are not wrestling against flesh and blood . . .

I get so sick of the Catholic/Protestant debates. I'm convinced that unless the Holy Spirit draws a person home to the Catholic Church, they aren't going to come. No one argued me home. No one even tried. Ask my catechist, the Lord lead me issue by issue through the faith. I argued with Him a time or two, but no human being ever pressed me on any Catholic doctrine, ever. It was the wooing of the Lover of my soul that brought me home, the sweetness of ancient truth that dismantled my man-made theology, and the gentle hands of my Mother Mary that helped me climb over my imaginary obstacles. Conversion is all grace. That's why I won't argue with people. They have the scriptures, they have the Fathers, they have all the resources they need to come home. I prefer to do battle for souls on my knees or in my little daily sacrifices.

Is there anyone left in the three branches of government today that can interpret our most sacred document (the Declaration of Independence not withstanding) correctly?

A buddy of mine who fought over in Iraq tells me of visiting a Catholic Church there. He said you’d hardly notice the church but on Sundays a number of Catholics would bravely arrive at Mass, knowing that their mere attendance could be a death sentence.
It affected him greatly. It made him think how he took for granted the ease with which he could attend Mass back in America with his wife and children. And I’ll admit that just hearing him speak of it, affected me. Not many Sundays go by without me thinking of those brave Christians who proclaim their love of Jesus at the risk of their own lives.
I know that growing up I always heard or read of the martyrs being put to death for their faith and at the time I was just so stupidly thankful that the world had moved beyond lions eating Christians in togas. But, of course, as I grew up I realized that the world hadn’t moved beyond that. It just got better at it. More efficient. Instead of lions, it’s bombs. Jesus is still the most reviled figure in history. Two thousand years later, His followers are still put to death all around the world.

Let's do the math. How many mosques did Catholics blow up this weekend? What was that, I can't hear you. OK, then let's count how many Christians were murdered while worshiping in their Churches this weekend. Twenty seven, by last count.

I heard it said once that if Israel laid down their arms there would be no more Israel, but if the Muslims laid down there arms there would be no war. I believe that. I also believe that if Catholic don't prop up our government leaders and insist that our freedoms are protected, we're in big trouble. I think history makes that abundantly clear: Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I think our nation, which worships at the altar of so called tolerance, is doomed to repeat the same old dusty battle of Christianity against Islam and it is doomed to lose simply because it is not Christian enough. Those of us who see it coming and are still clinging to our guns and our religion (not in that order, believe me) are crying out in warning like Jeremiah, but are not being heard.

Every day, on my way to work, I drive by a mosque. Every time I see that crescent raised above the neighborhood I pray for protection against the invasion of Islam in our country and around the world. It demonstrated how blind our society is that after being a force for human rights world wide, we turn around and start "sucking up" to a religion that completely destroys the rights of all Muslim women and children, and any other person who is not Muslim. How can a country that defends the rights of some terrorist that might have been roughed up by a few Navy Seals in the process of arresting him, tries them like criminals for doing their job, turn around and defend the rights of Muslims to mutilate their daughters, commit "honor killings," beat their wives into submission and make their 9 year old daughters marry some old man. Does anyone else see the insanity of this? It's like the whole world is so terrified of Islam after 9-11 that we are just falling in step with the rest of the world and giving over our freedom to this "religion" that needs to crawl back into the desert and leave the civilized world alone.

Islam is not a religion. It is a political ideology that has undermined the whole world. We need to wake up and call an invasion and invasion and take up arms against it.
